Do not worry, however, because recently we started gathering and compiling some known fixes, workarounds, and solutions to this problem and have incorporated all of them in this guide.

What Causes Minecraft OpenGL Error 1281?

After going through some basic troubleshooting processes, we concluded that the following are some of the most prominent reasons behind the occurrence of this issue.

  • Outdated Device Drivers: If some drivers on your computer have been outdated or have been incorrectly installed, you will see the Minecraft OpenGL Error 1281 while trying to use this setting. Therefore, it is recommended to check for any available driver updates as mentioned in the first solution below.
  • Outdated Java: It is also possible that sometimes the Java version installed on your computer is outdated and it needs to be updated before you can use the OpenGL setting on Minecraft. This can easily be remedied by installing the latest version of Java as mentioned below.
  • Optifine Tool: Some users were able to get rid of the OpenGL Error 1281 simply by installing the Optifine tool on their computers. You can also do this by simply navigating to their website and downloading and installing it on your computer.

Now that you have been made familiar with most of the reasons behind this issue, we can finally move on towards implementing the fixes.

Before we start:

Check if the mods, that you are using with Minecraft, are out of sync or mismatch. You can do this by matching their version compatibility from their official developer website. If the compatibility of the mods does not match, it is highly recommended to disable that mod and see if the error is eliminated. The most efficient approach is to disable all the mods and shaders at the start and enable them one by one to see which mod or shader causes the opengl error 1281.
